The grotto, which dates back to the 18th century, is to be given a modern interpretation as part of a careful renovation and artistic redesign. The focus is on the theme of "water" without changing the historical character of the grotto.

Artistic interpretation

The theme of water is symbolized by the combination of glass works, which are reminiscent of the movements and reflections of the water surface, and the blue pigmentation of the vault. The project thus represents a modern interpretation of the historical shell incrustation and combines artistic and historical elements.

Work carried out

  • Workshop works / Glass works
The artistically designed glass plates, inspired by water motifs, were produced by ceramic printing on glass. These glasses, worked on by the artist Diana Obinjawere given three-dimensional structures by lowering them into the kiln to depict the surface of the water.
  • Plastering work
In preparation for the ceiling painting, a salt storage plaster was applied, which was then finished with two layers of ultramarine blue pigments.
  • Artistic ceiling design
Under the guidance of Diana Obinja, the vault was designed with up to five layers of pigment glazes that simulate a night sky. In addition, the vault spandrels were provided with shell inlays, which were designed according to historical models.
