Building history and development
Date: 1964-1965
Architect: Günter Maiwald
Client: Sculptor Paul Brandenburg
The two-storey residential and studio building was built for the sculptor Paul Brandenburg and is now a listed building. The building combines living and working spaces in a solid construction made of sand-lime brick, partly plastered and partly left as exposed brickwork. The polygonal floor plan, the gallery on the second floor and large window fronts create an open atmosphere that opens up the house to the garden and terrace. A glazed studio area adjoins the south-west side and covers the full height of the building.
Design and architectural-historical context
The polygonality of the floor plan and windows as well as the combination of living and working spaces under one roof are characteristic. The design shows clear references to organic architecture since Scharoun, but is in closer tradition to Fehling & Gogel's expressive design language and spatial concepts.
Planned refurbishment measures
The refurbishment will be carried out in a manner that respects the listed building and preserves its substance in order to meet the requirements of the new owners:
- Energy-efficient refurbishment: ground-source heat pump, photovoltaics, insulation of basement, roof and exterior walls with Aerogel insulating plaster, underfloor heating.
- Conservatory: Planning a new conservatory.
- Accessibility: Adaptations to create accessibility.
- Floor plan adjustments: New wall openings and window openings.
All measures are carried out in coordination with the monument protection authority.
