Redesign of a village church in accordance with the preservation order

During the renovation of the Evangelical Church in Brockel we were commissioned with the design concept for the interior and the light planning.

Project

The baroque interior of the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche is designed as a transverse hall. The altar and pulpit are combined on one of the longitudinal walls in a room-high, wooden porch one above the other. Galleries enclose the altar area on three sides. The organ is located on the gallery opposite the pulpit altar.

The aim of the interior concept was to strengthen the basic qualities of the church interior and create additional space for meditation, children, music and presentations. In particular, the altar area was made more spacious and better usable through subtle interventions. The special aesthetics of the room results from the modern design of the historical wooden elements.

The lighting concept developed by D:4 emphasises the special features of the room and gives the opportunity to highlight liturgical acts and motifs. We have reinterpreted the motif of the chandelier in the luminaires specially designed for the room. With a flexible but easy to use control system, the church can be adapted to different requirements with different lighting moods.
