Within the framework of the restoration of a listed building, D:4 developed the design concept for the interior of the Protestant Church in Wiesbaden-Kloppenheim.

The Protestant church in Wiesbaden-Kloppenheim dates back to the 15th century and was designed as a simple baroque building. The historical design of the interior has largely been preserved. The pulpit and gallery were made using traditional carpentry, and the original color scheme of grey and red tones is complemented by floral paintings.

Aim of the refurbishment concept

The renovation concept had the primary goal of preserving the historic color scheme and wooden furnishings of the church and not pushing them into the background with new accents. In addition, the cramped space in the choir room was to be improved and flexible use for various events was to be made possible.

The new design elements pick up on the atmosphere of the church interior and deliberately make historical traces visible. Naturally aged wood was used for this, some of which came from donations and some from the original church furnishings. This material highlights the connection to the history of the place and its inhabitants. New elements such as a mobile lectern, a baptismal font, a cross and candlesticks were designed geometrically and cubically. The weathered wood was stacked in layers and adapted to the exact shapes. The baptismal bowl and candle holders were additionally covered with narrow strips of sandblasted gray mirror glass.

Connecting past and present

The design concept creates a visible link between the history of the church and its current use. The contrast between the cubic forms and the individually weathered wood emphasizes this bridge. The mobility of the new elements allows for a flexible structure that can be used for a variety of liturgical occasions.

Through this renovation, the Protestant church in Wiesbaden-Kloppenheim combines its historical significance with the requirements of a modern and versatile parish church.
