On behalf of the Evangelical Church District of Münster, we carried out a comprehensive analysis of church properties in Münster and the surrounding area. The aim is to develop a viable real estate concept that meets future requirements for sustainability and economic viability. This assignment is directly linked to the Protestant Church's Climate Concept 2040, which aims to reduce the church district's emissions by 40 percent. A participatory strategy was developed together with the 24 parishes in the church district in order to clearly formulate goals, priorities and future directions.

In the first step, all properties in the Münster church district were assessed on site, supported by interactive questionnaires distributed in advance and interviews with the congregations. A diverse portfolio was examined, including churches, parish halls, vicarages and kindergartens. A detailed analysis of room occupancy, the location-specific environment and the thematic focus of the individual parishes provided a comprehensive picture of the various locations. The existing collaborations between the municipalities were also included in the considerations and assessed for potential for future collaboration.

Based on the analysis, tailored proposals, concepts and designs were developed for the individual community locations. A wide range of options were considered - from the conversion of individual building areas and the search for new and long-term cooperation partners to the disposal or refurbishment of parts of the buildings. In addition to the preservation and sustainable development of the buildings, economic considerations also played a role. The options and results were presented to the municipalities, accompanied by intensive and continuous consultation on our part.

Initial successes and outlook

Since the process began in 2022, concrete changes and improvements have already been implemented to help municipalities make their properties fit for the future in the long term. The consultation process will continue in order to ensure that the municipalities can manage and maintain their building stock sustainably.
