Jeremia Parish Center Parish

Berlin-Spandau

Project management at the Jeremiah site

D:4 takes over the project management for the renovation and expansion of the Jeremiah site of the Evangelical Refuge and Jeremiah Church congregation in Falkenhagener Feld.

Occasion

In the Berlin district of Spandau, the large housing estate Falkenhagener Feld with approximately 10,000 apartments in social housing construction as well as various single-family house areas was built from the 1960s onwards.

In the course of these construction measures, the Protestant Church built the community centres Refuge and Jeremiah, among others. Both locations have extensive parish rooms, some of which are now used as day care centres. Both the Jeremia and the Refuge Church were built by the architect Bodo Fleischer in the style of post-war modernism and are thus present in the Falkenhagener Feld not least due to their characteristic church towers.

Decreasing membership and a growing need for social infrastructure in the Falkenhagener Feld led from 2012 onwards in the Protestant parishes of Zuflucht and Jeremiah to an increasing debate about the future of the community centres and church life. A feasibility study was commissioned in 2015 to design a new use concept for the two locations. The study was financed by the funding programme Stadtumbau West.

Project

As a result of the study, the two parishes of Jeremiah and Refuge 2017 merged and the new use concept is intended to counteract the increasing demand for social services in the immediate residential environment at both locations. It was therefore decided to expand the public welfare-oriented work at Zuflucht. In future, church activities are to be bundled at the Jeremiah location.

In close cooperation with the city district, church district and Berlin Senate, the project of the Protestant Refuge and Jeremiah Church Congregation has developed into a beacon project throughout Berlin. Both the architects' careful handling of the architecturally qualitative stock, as well as the growing importance of the community centres as a social contact point in Falkenhagener Feld, and last but not least the extensive commitment of the congregation are to be emphasised in view of the size of the project. In addition, the planning process places special emphasis on the sustainable and environmentally friendly use of the building ensembles.

From 2018, D:4 has taken over the project management for the conversion measures, which will begin at the end of the year. In this function, we accompany the municipality in the realisation of the project and take over the communication between the municipality, architects and sponsors.

The project is sponsored and supported by the Kitaförderung des Landes Berlin, Stadtumbau West, the church district of Spandau and the Evangelische Landeskirche.
