Repair and modernisation of residential buildings

The refurbishment of apartment buildings, which still characterise the cityscape of Berlin in all inner city districts, often involves more than the renovation and repair of the outer shell, staircases and apartments.

Architecturally demanding is the adequate handling of earlier phases of restoration, which not only often led to a new damage pattern in terms of structural engineering, but also pose a design challenge, as they often depict the most diverse building epochs in unconnected, adjacent and competing layers.

Another issue remains the restructuring of floor plans, which were often adapted to other needs at the time of their creation, but also at the time of earlier reconstruction phases. For this purpose, it is not only a matter of finding a solution that works, but also one that is good in terms of spatial design and thus goes without saying.

The project Goslarer Platz 6 focuses on the architectural solution to the characteristic contradiction between the post-war façade of a richly decorated corner building from the years before the First World War and the staircases, which are largely preserved in their original design.

The project Danckelmannstraße 15 is looking for an innovative answer to the problem of developing new living space on a small area. The bakery of a former bakery located on the ground floor will be converted into a one-room apartment, including parts of the staircase, which can be converted to a wheelchair accessible apartment with little effort.
