Jesus Christ Church

Berlin-Dahlem

Rehabilitation

The Protestant Jesus Christ Church in Berlin-Dahlem, built in 1930/31 by the architect Jürgen Bachmann, is to be renovated from 2020.

After the house was inaugurated in December 1932, the building suffered considerable damage during the Second World War. Bomb attacks in 1944 and 1945 destroyed mainly windows and parts of the roof, which is why water penetrated the building in the current years. In the post-war years, extensive renovation and reconstruction measures were carried out, including the separation of the front part of the church as a winter church.

Since then, only selective redevelopment and renovation work has been carried out. In the meantime, however, many parts of the church are in need of renovation. D:4 takes over all work phases here. Larger damages exist in the following points:

The clinker facade of the church and the tower show cracks and washed out joints that need to be repaired. In addition, the church windows are severely damaged due to age. These are dall glass windows, coloured cast glass, which are produced by hand casting and cast with concrete. The steel frames of the windows were mounted directly on the brickwork and are now heavily decayed.

Another major task is the slate roof, which has various damaged areas. A special challenge here is the preservation of the room acoustics. In doing so, modern building standards should be observed, but the materials used at the time should be used: Bricks, slate from Germany and wood wool mats.

Furthermore, various coverings of flat roofs have to be replaced and renewed, steel girders have to be renovated, areas derusted and elements on the façade replaced.

In the interior the heating must be renewed. In addition, a practicable solution is needed for the winter church, i.e. the current anteroom of the church. Here the church determines the so-called liturgical requirement. It is therefore important that the congregation has the space that best suits it.

In addition to the planning of redevelopment and possible conversion measures, D:4 also takes over the supervision and preparation of applications for subsidies.
