The chapel of St. Joseph Hospital in Berlin-Tempelhof is to be extensively renovated to meet the special requirements of a place that is intended to serve both spiritual and emotional needs. The hospital, known for having the highest birth rate in Berlin, will use this project to create a place that will offer space for contemplation and solace.

Design goals

The redesign will pursue a clear goal: to create an open and light-flooded atmosphere. The altar area will be architecturally emphasized so that it will develop a strong visual and spiritual presence as the central point of the room. Modern design elements such as warm colors and simple shapes will emphasize the harmony between tradition and contemporary aesthetics.

The redesigned chapel at St. Joseph Hospital will combine architectural precision with a high degree of emotionality and functionality. It will be a place of contemplation and consolation - open to people from a wide range of backgrounds and needs.

Instead of the original benches, flexible seating options will offer more comfort and adaptability. Lightly designed room dividers will structure the space and create areas that will be suitable for both communal use and individual moments of prayer or reflection.
Special attention will be paid to the design of interactive stations that will make the chapel a versatile place. An intercession station will invite people to share their thoughts and concerns, while a Bible station will provide editions in different languages to support cultural diversity and personal spirituality.

Design of the gallery

A central element of the renovation will be the area in the gallery, which will be specially dedicated to the star children. This room will be designed with great sensitivity in order to offer relatives a dignified place to grieve and remember.
Opposite the area for the star children, a further retreat room will be created, which will offer staff and visitors the opportunity to find peace and relaxation in the often hectic hospital routine.
